Port Elizabeth Airport
With a traffic level of over one million passengers passing through the PE Airport every year, it is no surprise that an expansion and upgrade was in order. And, since this impressive revamp, the PE Airport has certainly taken advantage of its prime location, boasting several new restaurants and service facilities, as well as improved amenities.
A key motivation for these improvements was the imminent Soccer World Cup in 2010, as this required that up to 2 million passengers be accommodated within the next few years. For this reason, the entire terminal required an expansion. The international arrivals and departures terminals are now fully compliant with international standards. Domestic arrivals and departures have also been upgraded accordingly, and work together to create an all-round professional and quality flying experience. Apart from the World Cup, a general increase in tourism to Port Elizabeth and the rest of the Garden Route and Eastern Cape has also prompted this growth initiative.
In addition to the improved facilities of the terminals, a dramatically improved retail and dining area has added to the experience of the PE Airport. These areas comprise coffee shops, café’s, family restaurants, cellphone shops, kids’ sweet shops, and curio stores to satisfy even the most avid shopping junkie. Added to this, a Bureau de Change and several ATM’s ensure that visitors are afforded the convenience that should come standard while travelling.
The PE Airport is conveniently situated within close proximity to some of Port Elizabeth’s most beautiful beaches, including King’s Beach, Hobie Beach and Clubhouse. Nearby shopping centres (Moffett on Main and Walmer Park, for example), guesthouses, and restaurants ensure that visitors to Nelson Mandela Bay are never short of places to go and things to see.
For local residents, secure parking is available. Whether short-term (less than 8 hours), or long-term, parking is close to all of the entrance points. Long-term parking is either covered by shade-cloth, or in lock-up garages. Incomers are offered a wide choice of car rental companies on site, including Avis, Budget, Europcar, Imperial and Tempest.
Because of PE Airport’s prime location, just minutes from the beachfront, guests to the Nelson Mandela Metropole are also within just a few minutes’ drive from a host of hotels, guesthouses and Bed & Breakfasts. Whether in PE for business, enjoying a family getaway, or just sharing the coastal experience with a special partner, the accommodation offering in and around the city centre guarantees no shortage of choice.
Additional facilities at the airport include those designed to cater for disabled travellers and guests, shuttle services for transfers to and from surrounding accommodation providers, luggage trolleys, and changing facilities for mothers with babies.
Development in and around the Nelson Mandela Metropole is growing exponentially and it is only appropriate that the airport conforms to the demands of an ever-expanding population and tourism sector. Port Elizabeth Airport strives to maintain the highest service and quality levels in order to further encourage visitors to this beautiful seaside metropole.
